How to Choose Your Diving Base

πŸŽ“

Certification Level

Your certification level is the most important factor. Open Water divers should start in Ayia Napa & Protaras or Paphos where shallow reefs and calm conditions build confidence. Advanced and Rescue divers unlock Larnaca's Zenobia wreck and Limassol's deeper profiles. Technical divers will find the most rewarding challenges in Limassol and Akamas & Latchi.

✈️

Travel Logistics

Larnaca Airport serves the east of the island, making Larnaca and Ayia Napa & Protaras the most accessible bases for international arrivals. Paphos Airport connects directly to the west, ideal for Paphos and Akamas & Latchi exploration. Limassol sits centrally and is reachable from both airports within an hour, making it a flexible hub for multi-region diving trips.

Dive Style

Underwater photographers gravitate toward Paphos for its cave systems and Ayia Napa & Protaras for turtle encounters. Wreck enthusiasts must base themselves in Larnaca. Marine life diversity peaks in Akamas & Latchi and Ayia Napa & Protaras. Night diving is excellent in Larnaca and Limassol. If you want variety across multiple dive styles, Limassol's central location and diverse site portfolio makes it an excellent all-round base.

Pro tip: Many divers base themselves in Larnaca for the first half of a trip β€” taking advantage of the Zenobia wreck and strong dive centre infrastructure β€” then drive west to Paphos or Akamas & Latchi for a change of scenery and dive style. The island is small enough that day trips between regions are entirely practical.

Seasonal Diving Conditions in Cyprus

Cyprus enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate that supports year-round diving, though conditions vary significantly by season. Summer months from June to September deliver the warmest water temperatures β€” reaching 28Β°C at the surface β€” with visibility frequently exceeding 30 metres in the calmer eastern bays. Autumn brings excellent conditions with warm water persisting into November and reduced boat traffic at popular sites. Winter diving is entirely possible with water temperatures dropping to around 16Β°C, rewarding divers with exceptional visibility and the chance to encounter migratory species. Spring sees water temperatures rising from March onwards, with April and May offering some of the best overall conditions of the year. Wind patterns affect the western regions more significantly than the east β€” Akamas & Latchi and Paphos can experience stronger swells during winter months, while Ayia Napa & Protaras and Larnaca remain diveable throughout the year. Always check local conditions with your dive centre before heading out.
