Marine Life in Ayia Napa & Protaras
The sheltered bays of Protaras and Ayia Napa support a rich variety of Mediterranean marine life. Green sea turtles and loggerhead turtles are the headline attraction, regularly encountered feeding in the seagrass beds. Octopus are abundant throughout the rocky reef systems, and moray eels inhabit the crevices of the reef walls. The MUSAN sculptures have become colonised by sponges, sea fans and small reef fish, creating a living artwork. Bream, wrasse, damselfish and parrotfish are constant companions on reef dives. Diving Conditions in Ayia Napa & Protaras
The eastern coastline of Cyprus provides natural shelter from the prevailing westerly winds, making Protaras and Ayia Napa the most reliably calm diving region on the island. Visibility is consistently excellent at 15โ30 metres, and currents are minimal at most sites. Water temperatures range from 17ยฐC in winter to 28ยฐC at the height of summer. The region is diveable year-round, with the calmest conditions from May through October. Even during winter months, the sheltered bays remain accessible when other parts of the island are affected by rough seas.
